Maison Publique

What do 100+ hours of drawing patterns waiting to be gold-foiled look like?

Voted number 13 on Canada’s top 100 restaurants list in 2018, Maison Publique is Jamie Oliver’s first North American restaurant, headed by chef Derek Dammann. “Maison publique” or “public house” in French is in the heart of mostly-francophone neighborhood Plateau Mont-Royal in Montréal.

The restaurant looks like a traditional British pub, with victorian era wallpaper and wood paneling that feel Canadian, too. The back dining room was once a small stable for horses until Expo '67 took place in Montreal and the mayor at the time banned livestock in urban areas.

The wallpaper and the ambiance were a major inspiration for the pattern on the sauce bottle designs, which were made at House9 design with Farah Khan. Rooster illustration by super talented sign painter Pierre Tardif.
